RTT: P-O-R-T-one-C-O

Tuesday?
Doesn't feel like Tuesday.
Stacy is the "temporary" host of Random Tuesday Thoughts. She's been holding down the fort for Keely for a bajillion Tuesdays now.
To participate, head on over to her blog, Stacy Uncorked. Be sure to leave her a comment, because who doesn't like some comment love!?

  • I just gave the kitten a bath. He was surprisingly ok. Of course he kept trying to latch on to the edge of the sink, but he was relatively good.
  • He's currently purring away on my chest. He's still a little damp, but I guess he loves me anyway. :P
  • This morning whilst I was doing the morning rituals on the toilet...*ahem*, he tried to use my knee as a ladder and scratched the top of my thigh all the way down to my ankle. It hurts.
  • It's thundering outside. Hopefully we'll get some rain.
  • Jeremy and I went yard-saling Saturday morning. We got some great deals. Including a new desk for the spare bedroom. It's huge! I will have to post a pic of it when I get all of my scrapbooking supplies organized and put away. It is currently covered in papers that I am trying to separate.
  • Got this cute Holly Hobbie doll for 50-cents.
  • We also went to a Vineyard near where we live and sampled their Muscadine wine. It smelled heavenly in there. I bought a candle so our apt could smell similar.
  • Yesterday, I drove to my sister's house--an hour away, to babysit the kids while she went to her doctor's appointment. Then, I rode with her to take The Princess to an impromptu doctor's appt. Poor baby has bronchitis. :(
  • Boog knows his ENTIRE alphabet. We looked at a magazine in the doctor's office and he spelled out the title P-O-R-T-one-C-O. LOL. Portico, but he said the I was a one. It did look like a one! He's so smart. :P
  • Since I was gone all day yesterday, I didn't get to clean the house and do laundry like I usually do on Mondays. So, I'm way behind. Gotta go switch out the laundry.
Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Book Review: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Book ThiefThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Book Thief is not what I was expecting, but that seems to be the theme here lately. This book has been on my to-read list for quite a while. I had no qualms about it being categorized as Youth. No one I know has read this book and I think that is a shame. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of WWII/Hitler's reign and fictional accounts of the years 1939-43. I had to read Night by Elie Wiesel in 9th grade. I think this book should also be a required read despite it containing quite a few profanities.

The main reason I rated this book 5 stars, is because Death is the narrator. I had never read anything quite like this before and Death makes for an interesting viewpoint.

Death was very busy during the reign of Hitler and despite what we think we know about Death, he is very interested in the lives of some humans. {well, at least in this book.} He comes in contact with Liesel only a handful of times, but he knows her story because he finds a book she has written about these times. He carries it with him and The Book Thief is his account of her life from the time she leaves her brother's grave to the end of her life when she is very old.

The Book Thief is a young German girl growing up during Hitler's reign. I was expecting to read about a Jewish Book Thief, but was surprised to be reading about one of Hitler's Youth. I think, just by reading how Liesel reacted to the parades of Jews, that most German children, had no clue what was really going on.

The first book Liesel "steals", is a guide to grave digging. Weird that there would even be a book for that but whatever. Her foster father helps her learn to read with this book, so perhaps it is the most important to her.

I won't go into detail because I'm sure most everyone would hate it to be spoiled, but, you're going to get attached to quite a few characters. Try not to expect too much excitement with this book, because it is written for Youth and it doesn't go into detail about the Holocaust.

This book is well-written and doesn't leave you hanging at the end. I would like to have known what Liesel did with herself after the war up until she died, but I'm guessing the author wanted to leave that up to the reader's imagination. Kudos.

RTT: I hate you Sarah McLachlan

Yes, it's Tuesday and that means it's my favorite day of the week. Maybe not this particular Tuesday, since I woke up with a headache, but in general...

Stacy is still keeping the random alive, so be sure to check out her blog to link up to Random Tuesday Thoughts. I wonder when Keely will resume her reign as Random Queen?

  • So, as the title implies, I hate Sarah McLachlan and her stupid ASPCA commercials.

They make me sad and feel bad about yelling at the dog for being
mean to the kitten and for yelling at the kitten to stop trying to eat my face. I mean, am I supposed to be a horribly disfigured Whitney or a kitten-less Mama because Sabrina ate him? That's what I thought. Shut up Sarah McLachlan. I don't have any money to send those poor little kitties and puppies.
  • Speaking of poor kitties, this one is going to have brain damage if he doesn't get out of my face while I'm trying to type. {I just gave him a good ole dose of morning breath and he still won't get off of my chest.}
  • Had to get up at 5:30 this morning to find Jeremy's name badge for work. He uses it to clock in and out, so he had to have it. I looked in the obvious places; on and around where he is supposed to put it. And I found it in third place I looked; under the bags on the kitchen table. {We went to the Dollar Tree last night for some fall/Halloween decor.} Why can't men find things on their own? I told him he didn't even look. {He probably didn't.}
  • Ever read The Book Thief? Not what I thought it was going to be about; it's better. It's from the perspective of Death. And it's about a little German girl who was sent to live with a foster family in Nazi Germany. I've never read any books like this that are written in the time period of the Holocaust. It's an interesting perspective. I will definitely be doing a review when I finish it.
  • It is really hard to see what I am typing when there are two little orange ears in my way... Tobias!
  • We went to Target last night after watching a movie. We bought kitty litter, some facewash and make-up for me and some dog treats and spent over $105!!! WTH? EVERYTHING is too expensive.
  • Bina and Tobias are getting along a little better. She still acts like she hates him when she thinks we're not watching. But I caught them on video several times last week, playing. {It's not the best quality b/c it was so dark, but not bad for a phone.} Note Tobias winking at me. :P
  • Until I started playing this next video, Tobias was purring like a little motor:

  • Sorry all of this randomness is about the cat. He's just so darn cute, I can't help but talk about him.
  • Did y'all see the giveaway I posted yesterday! It's awesome software, so be sure to check it out! You really need to enter this giveaway! And tell all of your friends!
  • It's raining today. I LOVE it!
  • What is the best kitten food to feed Tobias? I've heard that if the first ingredient is corn, don't buy it. Is that true? What do you cat owners feed your kitties?
  • Did you know Roseanne is on Netflix? I'm already on Season 2. I love that show.
  • I love doing these things on Facebook:
YOUR NURSING HOME FRIENDS : Use the first 7 people on the left side . No cheating!

Wheelchair races you down the hallways -
Has to change their depends A LOT -
    Steals your food -
... Vaselines your walker handles -
    Steals your teeth -
    Has the booze stash -
    Still gets it on -
That's enough random for today. I'm still sleep-hungover and haven't eaten breakfast yet. Be sure to enter the giveaway! Have a great RTT y'all! :)

Dear So and So...

I saw this meme on a blog that I read regularly, as it is sent to my email whenever the author posts. {I love that.}
There are lots of letters I would love to write everyday and this looks like the best way to get my point across to all those inanimate objects that I interact with on a day-to-day basis.
Apparently, this meme is posted on Fridays, but I may do them on Thursday.
Check out this cute blog and link up if you want to participate in Dear So and So!
Dear So and So...

Dear Meagan,
Thank you so much for this sweet kitty. We love him so much! I'm sorry you couldn't keep him because {L} was a little rough on him. I'm sure she'll be ready for a small pet soon. Maybe a puppy? They seem to be a lot more durable. haha. I'm glad I got to see you this week! I was having Meagan's face withdrawals. Let's not wait so long to hang out next time! Mmmk? Love you and I'm sorry I gave you lice that time in Kindergarten.
Love, Whit
------------------------------------------
Dear Tobias,
You are a sweet kitty. But please, stop acting like a little cracked-out, flying-fuzzball. You're scaring the dog. And I love that you want to cuddle, but ALL the time? I can't see the laptop or the tv when you're winding around and around my face with all 3.3 lbs of your orange, furry self.
Sabrina's water bucket is not yours! Stop trying to drink out of it, you're too little. Or not...
Also, the stuff moving on the screen of the laptop is not your play-thing. Stop batting the screen and quit trying to send messages to my friends on Facebook. It's annoying.

I love you anyway. I'm so proud of you for being a big boy and not messing up the bathroom last night.
Love, your new Mama

P.S. I love that little noise you make when you're eating a treat. Sort-of a purring, chewy noise. It's so cute. Keep up the cuteness.
-------------------------------------------
Dear Sabrina,
You're still Mama's baby, even though you have a new baby brother. But please, stop being nice to him when you think I'm not looking and being a butt-head to him when I am looking. It's mean and I know you're a sweetheart. Just be nice to him all the time and I'll give you more treats. MMmk?
This is her hate stare.
Love, Mama
------------------------------------------
Dear Facebook,
Quit trying to change everything. It's fine the way it is. If you're going to change anything, please tell me when the last time someone was online. I hate sending messages to people and have to wait 3 months for a reply because they're never online. Why do you have a Facebook at all? I'm talking to you, husband.
Thanks for all the fun times FB.
--Me
-----------------------------------------
Dear Thyroid,
Please stop acting stupid and making my body freak out. I would like to lose weight and get pregnant. You're ruining my life.
Thanks in advance,
Your Host.

That's all for this week's Dear So and So.

Book Review: The Last Summer (of You and Me) by Ann Brashares

The Last Summer (of You and Me)The Last Summer by Ann Brashares

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

May contain Spoilers:

The reviews say this book is a must-read for fans of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I don't think that's true. It didn't read anything like that series and the characters and setting were completely different. It was more like a Nicholas Sparks book than a Sisterhood book.

That being said, this book stands alone as a good read. It was very moving and I found myself getting anxious when Alice and Paul were together and when Riley got sick. I think that Alice and Paul punished themselves unintentionally by not trying to make it work after Alice found out Riley was sick. The whole situation was a mess.

I liked how the book ended, but would rather have had Paul buy Alice's family's beach house so they could keep it for themselves. I think Riley would have liked that. :P {You know, cuz characters are real to me.}

1. Right now, our weather is warm and sunny, but what I'd really like is cool and sunny, fall weather.

2. I like to let my hair down and scratch my head, when I'm sleepy

3. Mommy Rambles made a post about heroes... my hero is  my Daddy, because he was a great Daddy to me, even though I was his step-daughter.

4. It's a weird combination, but I swear pickled beets and cottage cheese are a perfect pair!

5. Some may see the glass half empty and others may see it half full, but I see it as full {Half air, half liquid}. Haha.

Oryx and Crake (by Margaret Atwood) Book Review

Oryx and CrakeOryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood

Warning: May contain spoilers.

Halfway through the book:

I seem to be stuck in a Dystopian rut; literally and figuratively. Within the past 4 months I have read 5 dystopian novels and this is my 6th.

The first Margaret Atwood book I read was The Handmaid's Tale which was recommended to me by a a friend who used to be a librarian. It was a great book, albeit odd.

This book is beyond creepy. I don't mean scary, I mean creepy: annoyingly unpleasant. lol. Who wants to read about child pornography and child slavery? Not to mention, the old man telling the story is the only one wearing clothing.

Why did M.A. invent all these new animals? Raskunk? Wolvog? Couldn't she have hyphenated the words to make them easier to read? Wolf-dog flows much easier than Wolvog. I keep stumbling over these strange animal names and even stranger place names. HelthWyzer? *sigh* We shall see how it ends...

MMk..well, it took me FOREVER to read this book. I was so reluctant to read it. I didn't like where it was going and I didn't want to find out what had happened to Oryx and Crake. I was really not looking forward to hearing more about where Oryx was before she met up with Jimmy and Crake.

I don't like the idea of the Crakers and I think Crake was an idiot for even meddling with a new human race and killing everyone else. I think it is immoral to grow organs and hybrid foods. And just plain gross. ChickieNobs? Just plain gross.

I don't think I'll be reading any more of Ms. Atwood's dystopian horrors in the near future.

Where Were You?

I can't believe it has been 10 years since the catastrophe that was 9/11, occurred. I remember where I was exactly:
I was in 10th grade, first period, Biology. We were in the lab cleaning and listening to the radio. I think it was 99.5. We heard on the radio that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane.
Coach House ran down the hall to Mr. Stafford's room. When he came back, he turned on the t.v. in the classroom and we all filed back in there to watch the news. We were sitting in our seats when another plane hit the second tower.
I think the majority of us were crying by then. And I was scared. They put the school on lock-down and we went to our next classes, but we didn't do anything in any of them. We just sat watching the t.v. all day.
I remember crying a lot when I got home and then I busted out the tapes and my stereo. I recorded at least 3 tapes off of the radio. I still have them.
I still cry when I see the videos and hear the songs about 9/11.
I still get sad when I think of all the lives lost due to terrorism and the aftermath caused by it. I had to worry for over a year while my husband and his unit were deployed to the middle east to fight the war on terrorism. I know how much it hurts to lose someone you love, but I still can't imagine how the lives that were affected by 9/11 were changed. Parents, children, friends and co-workers killed by such a senseless act of hate. My prayers still go out to the family and friends of those lost.
God Bless our Firefighters, Policemen, Soldiers and Volunteers.
God Bless the Families affected by 9/11 and give them peace.
God Bless the U.S.A.
and
God Bless whomever is reading this.

When the night
Seems to say
All hope is lost
Gone away
But I know I'm not alone

By the light
She stands

There she waves
Faithful friend
Shimmering stars
Westward wind
Show the way
Carry me
To the place
She stands

Just when you think it might be over
Just when you think the fight is gone
Someone will risk his life to raise her

There she stands

There she flies
Clear blue sky
Reminds us with red
Of those that died
Washed in white
By the brave
In their strength
She stands

When evil calls itself a martyr
When all your hopes come crashing down
Someone will pull her from the rubble

There she stands

We've seen her flying torn and tattered
We've seen her stand the test of time
And through it all the fools have fallen
There she stands

By the dawn's early light
And through the fight
She stands

Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In #57

I'm still participating in Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-Ins, but I don't know for how much longer. I really prefer the questions instead of the fill-ins. lol. It's really ironic. Maybe Wifey can include both?! :)

1.My plans for Labor Day included watching tv and hanging out with Jeremy, but what really happened was exactly what I planned.

2.Call me crazy, but sometimes I just need to cry

3. One of the funniest things I've seen lately is Sabrina laying in the clothes basket this morning instead of on her bed

4.It's strange, but clutter drives me crazy while keeping everything is perfectly fine with me!

5.One, two, buckle my shoe... three, four reading books galore.

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me

Lies that Chelsea Handler Told MeLies that Chelsea Handler Told Me by Chelsea Handler

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I guess it's true that it doesn't matter if you know Chelsea personally, you're still going to get sucked into her world. LOL. The first book I read by Chelsea, was Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea. It was hilarious. So, I went back to the library to find more of her books. This one is the third I've read and didn't like it nearly as much; probably because it wasn't written strictly by her. She did, however, have mini-notes at the end of each chapter. The notes alone cracked me up. I can't believe how gullible her family and friends are!

Sometimes, I wish I knew her in real life. But, then again, I knew that I would be someone she would lie to all the time. Not that I would believe her, but still...

I really can't believe my library carries her books. I think if any of the ladies who work there (who all seem so proper) ever read these books, they would throw them away. Haha.

Word-FULL Wednesday: Dead Reckoning Review

Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11)Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I originally rated this 4 stars, but changed my mind and took one away. Here's why:

I love the Sookie Stackhouse series, but in this last installment, C.H. really drove me insane. How many times do you really need to recap that Bubba is Elvis? I'm pretty sure we all remember that from the first book. I feel like she kept re-summarizing from all of the other books, and sure, we all need a reminder. But not everytime the character is mentioned!

In whole, I enjoyed this book and it only took me a few hours to read it. (As usual) I did not like how her last two books have ended and this one in particular since it is the latest. I felt like the whole incident with Alcide in Sookie's bed was overkill. It wasn't necessary and she never even addressed the situation afterwards.

Again, overall, I enjoyed this book but when all is said and done, it felt a lot like a filler. Like all of this happened while Sookie was on down time. I mean, she cleaned out her attic and found an old desk with a secret compartment? What's up with the cluvial dor? Why bring in something that she didn't even make good use of in this book? We can be assured that C.H. will overly explain what it is and where it was found in the next installment.

Let's all hope the next Sooke Stackhouse adventure will be worth our time.

RTT: Finally some perfect reading weather!

Stacy is still keeping the Random alive over at Stacy Uncorked,
be sure to check out her blog and link up to Random Tuesday Thoughts!
  • I'm having a hard time thinking of random things because of this rainy, cold day. It feels great outside, so I shut off the air and opened up the living room windows. 'Bina and I are cuddling on the couch while I blog and play Sims on FB.
  • I just got stuck playing Sims on FB for 35 minutes... Sorry 'bout that.
  • I finally finished Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris. I know the sidebar still says I'm reading it, but it won't let me change it to nothing. I don't have anything to read until I go to the library later this afternoon.
  • I can't believe the way it ended!! She just left you hanging. My sister has the last book to the series, since I bought it for her birthday. But, I doubt my library has it. They don't have a lot of books at all. There are lots of shelves that are only half full. It is disappointing really. But, I guess it is a fairly new library.
  • I had someone suggest a book to me today, so I think I'll look for it along with a few others that weren't in last time I went.
  • Did I mention lately that I'm ready for fall??
  • Jeremy and I rearranged the living room Saturday. Now the tv is in front of the windows with the couch facing it. But the couch isn't against the wall anymore, which I love. Now, we just have to wait til we have enough money to buy a longer cable cord to put the tv against the wall that the couch used to be against. I don't like the tv in front of the windows since we leave the blinds open most of the time. It's going to make the tv a lot dustier, I think.
  • And we also need to hang something on the blank wall where the couch used to be. It's too white.
  • We had a great time in Florida visiting with J's family the weekend before last. I wish we could go back. I miss them already.
  • J's brother, Chris and his wife, Kelly, went to the Auburn game Saturday (War Eagle!). She didn't reapply her sunscreen and now she's burnt really bad. Even her hands and fingers got burned, so they are swollen. Bless her heart.
  • J went to the storage unit Saturday and I asked him if he would bring back the fall stuff, but he said no. So, unfortunately, I still haven't started decorating. I guess I'll give it another week or so.
  • Thanks for everyone commenting on my 6WS. I did sleep soundly Saturday night...well, not really since I couldn't go to sleep until 5am, Sunday morning. I stayed up reading since I couldn't sleep. J had made some coffee and I had a large cup of it. It kept me up and so did the prospect of having nightmares again.
  • Did everyone see Oregon's new uniforms on Saturday?? They are awesome! I am distracted by their shoes, but I still want a pair. LOL. J and I watched the game since they were playing LSU and we wanted to see how well the #3 and #4 teams are playing this year. Pretty well. They are evenly matched. Although, LSU did win.
  • Auburn has been bumped out of the national polls, but that won't stop me from loving them!! War Eagle!!
  • I think I'll take a break from the computer and watch UP! for the ump-teenth time. :P
