Happy Flag Day

Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14.

As the legend goes, it was George Washington and two other members of the Continental Congress who asked Betsy Ross to sew the first American flag sometime in the late spring of 1776. The young widow was only in her early 20's when she completed the first flag with thirteen stars arranged in a circle.

A year later, the Continental Congress officially adopted the design for the national flag,
and henceforward the Stars and Stripes symbolized the U.S. around the world.
The first "official" Flag Day was celebrated in 1877 - the flag's centennial. In 1916, a grass roots movement resulted in President Woodrow Wilson issuing a proclamation that called for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14. Although still not an official holiday, Flag Day was made a permanent observance in America in 1949 by Congress who resolved "That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day."
Why red, white and blue? To the original members of the Continental Congress, red stood for hardiness and courage, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice.
Why thirteen stars and stripes? They represented the thirteen American colonies which rallied around the new flag in their fight against the British for self-governance.
The thirteen colonies included Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
To this day, thirteen stripes still commemorate the original colonies. Instead of thirteen stars, today the number of stars on the US flag has grown to 50, representing every state in the Union.
How to celebrate Flag Day
Wave Old Glory from the front porch, apartment balcony or window, or attend Flag Day parades or festivities sponsored by local organizations.
Hold an open house or a backyard barbecue. Decorate the backyard in red, white, and blue. A Flag Day menu might include lots of American favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs and, for desert, how about an American flag cake?

RTT: "I fight gangs for local charities and stuff"

AHH Tuesday... quickly becoming my favorite day of the week. I can't imagine why. This is what, the 12th week of Keely's hiatus? It has reached epic proportions. I fear she has become consumed in this malevolent thing called work. Anyone feel like going to rescue her?? I totally would, were I closer. Anyway... let's keep this random going on. Forward ho!

Don't forget to link up at the bottom of this post if you're participating in RTT and/or over at Stacy Uncorked. Stacy is keeping the random rebellion alive, with wine!
  • "The Last Song" was a big disappointment. Miley Cyrus isn't very good at acting if you ask my opinion.
  •  Honey Smacks aren't as gross as I remember them being when I was little. Especially since I can buy the name-brand ones now. LOL.
  •  I finally finished My Booky Wook by Russell Brand. It really is like reading a book written by a drugged-out lunatic, but there you have it. It was quite interesting and I still like him, but it helps to know why he is the way he is. Haha.
  • I love The Princess Bride.
  • "Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam...""And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva..." "So tweasure your wuv."- The Impressive Clergyman
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."- Inigio Montoya
Inigo Montoya: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.
Man in Black: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.
"There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours."- Westley
"I fight gangs for local charities and stuff." -Fezzik
  • I'm now reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. I really like it and can't believe I haven't read it before. I think next, I'll try to read either Jane Eyre or Anna Karenina sine they are both free to download on my Kindle for Android. {That's on my phone y'all!}
  • I nearly drowned myself yesterday. I jumped in the pool with Jeremy {we held hands and it appeared to be a suicide pact} and when I came up, I quit holding my nose and immediately I sank back under {of course} and forgot to kick. Hence, I swallowed a mouthful of {most likely tainted} pool water and it went up my nose as well.
  • I jumped back in a few minutes later in order to save face and to prove I wasn't afraid. That time I hit the bottom with my right foot and came up "Oww-ing". I blame Jeremy.
  • Sabrina went to the groomers yesterday. She is so skinny-looking and prettiful. :)
  • Just got side-tracked on Facebook for thirty minutes...jeez.
  • J is leaving this Friday for his WLC {Warrior Leader Course} in Mississippi. He won't be home until the 2nd. :( Booo! Our anniversary is the 29th. *sigh*
  • Any ideas on what to get J for our 3rd anniversary?? This year, the traditional gift is leather, but he doesn't want a new wallet or anything. And he has plenty of belts. So, I'm thinking of not bothering with the leather part. What are some other gift ideas??
  • My goal for the length of Jeremy's absence is to finish entering all the books I have logged in my notebook into Goodreads. It's a lot easier to keep up with all the books I've read and how many times I've read them.
  • I also need to find a job, so I'll be filling out as many applications as I can. I'd love to get into some program to help pay for college online classes, but it makes me nervous just thinking about it.
  • I hope to finish three paintings, so we can finally have something on the wall above the couch. How many weeks have I been saying that?? The pool is just so much more fun...
  • My neighbor was quite rude to me yesterday...
  • I got up at 5:30 yesterday! Can you believe it?? My shoulder was still killing me and it felt like something was biting the back of my leg, but when I went to look, there was nothing there. So, I just got up. Sabrina was not thrilled about that, she stayed in bed until I told her I was going outside. Then, she got up and went. When we got outside, she didn't want to go potty because the grass was wet with dew. Haha.
  • Happy 236th Birthday to the Army.
  • The Army announced that the patrol cap will replace the black wool beret as the default headgear for the Army combat uniform. Finally! I know J and the rest of his unit hate wearing that hot beret all the time and having to carry around the beret and the cap. The Army also is making the Velcro optional. Soldiers can choose to sew on their name tapes, rank and service tapes instead of using the Velcro.
  • I'm all for the no Velcro. Do you know how many pairs of my underwear have been ruined by the Velcro on J's ACUs? It's ridiculous. I quickly learned that I can't wash the ACUs with anything else.
  • My next door neighbor's cleaning lady sounds like she's tearing the apartment up.
  • Mama came to hang out with us last Thursday. It was a lot of fun having her here. She watched me fold clothes, helped me fix dinner and then we swam. J came home early and went swimming with us and then we ate dinner. I made a pork roast with carrots, potatoes and onions. It was pretty yummy. =)
  •  Did I mention that I won Chantal's giveaway! Yes I did!! I'll be reading a new book soon!
  • I finally finished cleaning out the spare bedroom Sunday. It looks a lot better, but now all the camping stuff is laying in the hallway, waiting on J to take it to storage.
  • My friend Janel is on first shift this week, which means she doesn't get home until after 4 and then I don't see her because her husband is at home. Boo! I like second shift much better so she has time to go to the pool with me. lol. I'm selfish that way.
  • I seriously need to find the library here.
  • Hahahahaha, the cleaning lady just sucked something up and the vacuum cleaner was making a horrible buzzing noise.
  • This conversation just took place on FB:
  •  It rained over the weekend, thank God. It was great. I was home alone and cleaning out the spare bedroom and it just started pouring. I was like, what is that??
  • It also rained Friday while J and I were out eating at this great restaurant-- Mexico Lindo Grill. The food was awesome, the atmosphere was awesome, they didn't cost too much and their staff was very attentive. We'll def. be going back there soon.
  • J is going to be home for lunch soon and I still haven't eaten breakfast.
  • This conversation took place the other day:
  •  I had to call and cancel the movie channels yesterday. :( I'm really bummed, because the new seasons of Weeds and Dexter are coming soon. And it's $12.99 a month for just the Showtime channels. UGH!

Alrighty, that's enough random for today. I'm starving. I will be back tomorrow for Wordless Wednesday and probably to tell you about our date night. I noticed last night that I'm up to 48 minions fans! Don't forget that when I reach 50, I'm doing a giveaway!! {Bet you thought I'd forgotten!} So tell your friends, family and coworkers. Just kidding... but seriously, if you're following me over from RTT, be sure to follow my blog so I can do this giveaway already. GOSH.

Six Word Saturday

Dreamt about someone
I don't like.
(What are my dreams trying to tell me?
To get in contact with someone I don't even like,
that I haven't spoken to in almost 4 years??)
Normally I love Saturdays, but not today.
I didn't wake up until 10 because I tossed and
turned all night with my right shoulder. It's been bothering me
for over a week now.
What really stinks about it being my right shoulder, is the fact
that I sleep mostly on my right side. And even if I start out on
my left side, I flip to my right while I'm sleeping. *sigh*.
It's going to be a long day.
J wants me to clean out the spare bedroom while
he's at drill this weekend, but I don't think it's
going to get done at this rate.
I'm currently watching Babar and chillin'
on the couch with Sabrina.
Nope, it's not going to get done.

Go visit Cate; she's been productive.
Link up with your six words.
Do it! It's lots of fun!

Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In

These are some really interesting questions this Friday. Are you a Mil-Spouse? Then you should definitely check out Wifey's blog, Wife of a Sailor and join in every friday!

1. When you vacation what type of vacation do you like to take (beach, historic, adventurous, food oriented, etc.)? submitted by Megan Dub-Yuh
I love the mountains. But I also love unplanned road trips. Those are the ones that I remember the most when I was little.

2. What is your best memory associated with a song (you know we all have tons!) submitted by Ramblings of a Marine Wife
Oh wow. I do have so many; it's hard to think of just one. "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Paisley reminds me of my Daddy. I love that song.
3. If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with your time? submitted by Married to the Army
I'd go on a road trip! I'd visit all the places all over the world, that I've always wanted to see.
4. What is one thing about you that people do NOT typically notice at first that you wish they would? submitted by Our Motto is Patience
Umm... I can't think of anything.

5. submitted by The Three TurnersIt's a summer of sequels, and if you had to live in one of each of the following "worlds" (there are three total) which would you choose and why?
--X-Men: Be a Mutant, what would your power be? Well, I'd definitely be a mutant. I wouldn't want a power that could hurt people. I think Mystique is cool. She can look like whatever she wants.
--Harry Potter: Be a Witch or Muggle? Harry Potter! I'd totally be a witch! I actually had a dream about a Harry Potter-esque world last night. LOL. J and I love us some Harry Potter. We will definitely be in the theatre when the last half of The Deathly Hallows comes out!

--Twilight: Be a Vampire or Werewolf? I'd be a werewolf. I couldn't stand the thought of killing someone to drink their blood. Ewww!

RTT: I love the smell of suntan lotion in the morning...

 It's all coconut-y and sweet-smelling. It reminds me of beach trips with my family when I was little. {I still hate summer... it's too hot!}

It's Tuesday, let's be random...
Keely is still on her hiatus, for the eleventh week in a row. I wish I had her job.
Stacy at Stacy Uncorked is keeping the RTT spirit alive {with wine!}, check out her blog and link up or you can link up here. :)

  • J and I have been spending a lot of time at the pool gettin' our tan on. I have a pretty good one going on, on my shoulders and back. Hopefully I'll get it evened out. I have a farmer's tan on my right arm. Looks ridiculous.
  • It's HAWT outside. I melt as soon as I walk outside and my skin feels like the desert.
  • Talladega is under a state of emergency. They have no water pressure. J told me that yesterday, so I don't really know what's going on.
  • The Army finally paid us. Just when we though we were going to have to sell off some organs to pay the bills.
  • We saw X-Men First Class Sunday night; it was awesome! Now we finally know why Professor Xavier is in a wheelchair.
  • I'm still reading My Booky Wook. It's taking me forever. I don't know why. I guess I'm just not in a reading mood lately.
  • J and I spent the weekend at Mama's house. He worked on the lawn mower, weed-eated and cleaned up the shop. Saturday we took all the junk from the shop to the dump.
  • Not sayin' I went through the dump bins or anything, but I found a brand-new pack of styrofoam balls! {They were just laying there!}
  • J leaves for WLC in two weeks. He'll be gone for almost half a month. He's going to miss our 3rd anniversary on June 29th. :( I'm really going to miss him. But 2 1/2 weeks is nothing compared to a year.
  • Sabrina is lazy...but I'm sure y'all know that by now.
  • I feel bad about not blogging as much lately. But we did just get back the laptop last week. I'm going to get back in the swing of things soon.
  • Kirkland's was having a sale for Memorial Day weekend; we bought this. I love it! I can't wait to hang it above the couch.
  • Gas is finally below $3.50 a gallon.
  • My brother finally came over to the apartment to hang out with us. I made breakfast for dinner.
  • Went to renew my tag last Tuesday. It was $90.17! Good grief. It was the first time I had ever bought a tag in another county.
  • My shoulder is killing me.
  • I wish I could be in the pool right now.
  • We've decided to move our "date night" to Tuesdays since it's cheaper to watch a movie on Tuesdays.
  • Gotta go to the bank, so I'm wrapping up the random here.
Hope y'all are having a great week so far. Go forth and be random!
